2021 Winners Release

16th Annual BCMS Young Artist String Quartet Competition Results

The Boise Chamber Music Society is pleased to announce results of the 16th Annual BCMS Young Artist String Quartet Competitions, completed virtually May 3, 2021. Four Idaho collegiate string quartets competed for cash prize awards for their artistry and tenacity in the face of the Pandemic year. Judges were violinist Karen Kim and cellist Rachel Henderson Freivogel of the Jasper String Quartet, which has been rescheduled to open the Boise Chamber Music Series on Oct. 8, 2021.

The first-place winning quartet, from Brigham Young University, Idaho, is the Jupiter Quartet, coached by Prof. Dallin Hansen. Krystell Wright and Noelle Singleton, violins; Clayton Johnson, viola; and Jaquell Taylor, cello, will share the $1000 first prize. They played a program of Beethoven’s Quartet, Op. 59, No. 3, first movement, and Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 3, first movement. The College of Idaho StringQuartet, coached by Prof. Dave Johnson, won second place with their program of Mozart’s Quartet K 421, third movement, and Rachmaninov’s Quartet No. 2, first movement, and will receive a $600 prize.

In the pre-college category, just one Idaho high school quartet was able to prepare a competition program— Timberline High School’s SunriseQuartet, with violinists Brennan Spaulding and Wonyoung Lee, violist Leonard Eppich, and cellist Emma Wells. Their program included Mozart’s Quartet K. 575, movement two, and Sibelius’ Voces Intimae, movement four, as coached by Micah Claffey. They fulfilled their commitment to finish their participation, and they received positive professional feedback from the judges.

Two more quartets from BYU-Id with coach Dallin Hansen submitted their performance programs for the collegiate round: Adélie Quartet with Annie Smith and Elizabeth Jones, violins; Tessa Fausett, viola; and Tori Draughon, cello; and Spillville Quartet with Natasha Jacobson and Junior Tovar, violins; Justin Parry, viola; and Christian Martínez, cello. All participating quartets and coaches are commended for their extra efforts to work together during this uniquely difficult school year.

The Boise Chamber Music Society and Boise State Department of Music are proud to support this annual event highlighting and encouraging the accomplishments of student string players across the State of Idaho.
